Literature Text

When she got to school, Taylor headed straight to the cafeteria, hoping to catch Adele there. She stood near the breakfast line, gazing out into the crowd, but didn’t see her. Taylor sighed, rubbing her face with her hands. She turned to go, almost bowling someone over in the process. “Hey, Tay, watch where you’re going!!” She looked down to see her best friend, Kara, smiling up at her. Kara was shorter than short, barely reaching five foot. Her short black hair was kept tame with lots of gel and time. Her dark brown eyes sparkled with mischief as she smiled at her tall friend. “You really should keep an eye out for us small people.”
Taylor grinned back. “You should wear a bell so I know when you’re there.” She looked around the cafeteria again. “She’s not here. Dammit! Kara, have you seen Adele?” Kara looked at Taylor in utter confusion.
“Adele? Adele who?” Taylor stopped, realizing that Kara might not know who she meant.
“You mean I don’t have a sister? There’s no one in my life named Adele?” She prayed that there was.
“Well, there is Adele Johnson. I mean, you guys have the same last name, but you aren’t related. She’s only a sophomore though and doesn’t run in the same circles you do. Why would you be asking about her?”
Taylor sighed in relief. So Adele was OK. “No reason, I just thought I saw her last night over by my house and she looked upset. I wanted to make sure she was OK.”
Kara rolled her eyes. “Trust me, she’s more than OK. She’s on her way to being the most popular girl in school. You don’t need to be worrying about her. What you need to worry about is our Trig test today. I’m totally gonna fail!!!” Kara took her arm and led her out of the cafeteria and towards their first period class, Taylor glancing over her shoulder the whole way.
