Chapter One
When Taylor awoke the next morning, she looked at her alarm. Normally, she set it twenty minutes early, so she could do what she needed to do in the bathroom before Adele got up. Otherwise, she'd never get into the bathroom. But one look at the clock and she knew she was late. She jumped up and ran into the bathroom, slamming and locking the door. Breathing hard, she started brushing her hair and teeth at the same time. She expected to hear Adele pounding on the door at any minute and she knew she needed to be done quickly. But after ten minutes, when she heard nothing, she knew something was up. Pulling her hair into a pony tail, she went down the hall to Adele's room. Listening at the door, everything was quiet. No sounds of Adele's soft snoring or anything. She knocked lightly but got no response, so she slowly opened the door to peak inside. The room was empty! Well, there were a couple boxes, but all of Adele's things were gone. No dresser or bed or anything Dust was everywhere and the window looked like it hadn't been washed in ages. Taylor took a step back in shock. Where could Adele be? She raced downstairs to the kitchen, looking for her parents. Maybe they would know what was going on.
She found them where they always were, sitting at the table, eating breakfast, reading the paper, and talking about what they had planned for the day. Her mother's light blonde hair was pulled back in a bun. She was wearing a plain nurse's smock, for her day at the school as a school nurse. Her father had his jet black hair gelled back smoothly. He had trimmed his gotee and side burns. Being an accountant for a law firm, he had to look tidy all the time. Taylor screeched to a halt in front of them and panted out, "Where's Adele?"
Her father set the paper down and her mother turned to her. "Adele? Why sweetie, who is Adele?" Taylor's brow knit in confusion.
"You know who she is! My sister!!" Her parents shared a look, her father's eyebrows almost disappearing into his hairline.
"Taylor sweetie, sit down. We don't know who this Adele is that you speak of. We only have one child, and that is you." Her mother reached for her hand, a look of concern on her face.
"Only me? No one else. No siblings?" She pulled her hand away, rocking back and forth. This couldn't be possible. What had happened to Adele? Where could she be? She had to be OK, she couldn't just be gone.
Her mother nodded. "Yes honey, only you. We had two miscarriages after you and decided to stop trying. That it was a sign that you were to be our one and only." She took her father's hand and smiled at him.
"But, you've always told me before that you tried one more time and that's how you got Adele!" Her father turned to her slowly.
"We had considered it, but the heartbreak was too great, so we didn't. I don't know where you are coming up with these stories young lady but they are very upsetting. Why aren't you ready for school  yet?" Taylor looked down at herself and realized she was only half dressed. She had managed to get a regular band shirt on, but was still in her pajama pants. Turning red, she rushed upstairs to finish changing, all the time her mind realing. All she could think about was getting to school and hopefully catching Adele there.
